In November 2014, to benchmark our operations for sustainable good practice, the Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna voluntarily engaged SCS Global Services to begin an evaluation of the fishery with the goal of demonstrating that tuna caught by the members of the Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna meets the sustainability criteria of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).  We were awarded certification in August 2017.

MARINE STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL CERTIFICATION

As the leading ecolabel and certification program for wild-caught, environmentally sustainable seafood, MSC’s fishing standards are some of the most rigorous in the world.

MSC’s sustainable fishing standard is a globally accepted standard for certifying fisheries for sustainable practices. MSC’s certification program is the only program for wild-capture fisheries consistent with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s (UNFAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing, UNFAO Guidelines for the Ecolabeling of Fish and Fishery Products from Marine Capture Fisheries, and the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards.

To become MSC certified and maintain that certification, fisheries must demonstrate that target fish stocks are healthy, the impact of fishing on the marine ecosystem is minimal, and that the fishery is well-managed.
