Northeastern Tropical Pacific Tuna Fishery Enters into the Marine Stewardship Councils’s Full Assessment Process

The Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna Reaffirms Its Commitment to Sustainability

MEXICO CITY, November 6, 2014 – The Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna today announced that it has voluntarily entered its Northeastern Tropical Pacific Purse Seine Yellowfin and Skipjack Tuna Fishery into full assessment by SCS Global Services, for possible Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. The decision reflects the Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna’s commitment to the long-term health and viability of the tuna fishery in the northeastern tropical Pacific and the protection of the marine environment through responsible fishing practices.

For over 20 years, the Northeastern Tropical Pacific Purse Seine Yellowfin and Skipjack Tuna Fishery has been committed to conservation and sustainable management. The members of the Pacific Alliance for Sustainable Tuna follow the scientific recommendations and guidance for sustainability set forth by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission’s (IATTC) scientific staff and participates fully in the Agreement on the International Dolphin Conservation Program (AIDCP). Each company involved ensures that 100% of their vessels are monitored by independent scientific observers who ensure compliance with sustainability measures.
