Ocean-wide Dolphin Surveys for the ETPby Communications Team at the AllianceNovember 15th, 2017

During the evaluation and audit to certify our fishery to the MSC standard, we heard from many stakeholders that they were interested in the state of the dolphin populations in the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP) Ocean (sometimes known as ETPO).

As part of our Action Plan for MSC certification, we have agreed to fund the IATTC to hire a neutral, independent head scientist from an international organization to lead surveys of dolphin species in the ETPO.

This important undertaking is the legal responsibility of the U.S., under their Marine Mammal Protection Act; but they have been unable to fund the surveys since 2008.

We’re excited for Mexico, for the scientific community, and for our certification to announce that we’ll be donating funds to the IATTC to gather international, independent scientists to design and implement these surveys.

We expect the results to be published in 2020 or 2021.

We welcome all NGO stakeholders that wish to collaborate on these important surveys to contact us!
