Environmental Defense Fund Spearheads Fishery Sector Innovationsby Communications Team at the AllianceJanuary 19th, 2018

We’re really pleased to report back from the Environmental Defense Fund’s 8th Meeting on Sustainable Fisheries Management which was held in Mazatlán on January 18th and gathered industry, government, and NGO leaders to discuss innovations and furthering sustainability in Mexican fisheries.

We explored really important topics including sustainability and innovation in management; collaboration and participation; certifications and markets; fisheries policy; and transparency and accountability.

And we did so in a way that we believe is the future for Mexico – focused on social and economic needs alongside environment.

EDF-Mexico’s General Manager, Laura F. Rodríguez Harker, shared EDF’s approach, “Sustainability in fisheries is not just about the environment – but social, economic, and biological aspects need to be considered.”

We wholeheartedly agree. It’s critical to work for thriving oceans but also for healthy communities and productive economies. We can balance these three things.

We’re proud that EDF-Mexico truly understands that sustainability must have people at its core. And we’re pleased that Mexican NGOs are leading the way.

EDF-Mexico consistently brings together top leaders to discuss fisheries in Mexico. And this year was no different. Some of the attendees representing the government included: Senator Francisco López Brito, member of the Commission of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Senate of the Republic; Jorge Abel López Sánchez, the delegate of SEMARNAT in Sinaloa; José Luis Moreno, Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Sinaloa; and Rigoberto García Soto, Head of Legal Affairs at Conapesca; Carlos Omar Vergara Valderrábano, a regional representative for Conapesca.

Our Executive Director, Mariana Ramos Sánchez, represented the Alliance along with others from the private sector including: Humberto Becerra Batista, President of CANAIPESCA; the president of the Mexican Confederation of Fishing Cooperatives (CONMECOOP), José Jesús Camacho; the director of CANAINPESCA, Fernando Medrano Freeman; and regional leaders of fishing federations of Sinaloa, Sonora, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Nayarit, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
